ROLE BRIEFThe position of Senior Legal Counsel - Head of Civil & Commercial Litigation (Division) is a crucial role within the Legal Department. As the head of a specific division, the individual is responsible for managing a team of 2-3 members and ensuring the overall performance and growth of the division.Heads of Divisions are entrusted with a diverse range of responsibilities to ensure effective management and coordination of legal matters. This role involves strategizing, supervising legal proceedings, and fostering client relations to optimize outcomes.One of the primary responsibilities of the Head of Civil & Commercial Litigation is to meet with clients and ensure meeting minutes are recorded. This allows for effective communication and understanding of the clients needs. Additionally, the individual is responsible for crafting tailored strategies for each case and client after thorough consultations and document reviews. They must also identify legal problems and provide solutions, as well as identify opportunities for new litigation services.Advising clients on civil and commercial matters is another core duty of the Head of Civil & Commercial Litigation. This includes drafting and preparing legal advices, contracts, legal notices, court pleadings, statements, and submissions. It is also essential for the individual to review and monitor the work of the assigned litigation team members, ensuring the quality of submissions and making any necessary amendments.Managing the assigned team members is a vital aspect of the role. This includes assigning tasks, supervising their daily tasks and progress, and providing ongoing support and mentorship. The Head of Civil & Commercial Litigation must ensure that all legal advices and submissions are prepared on time by the team and that clients are regularly communicated updated on the progress and results of litigation matters.Court hearings are a significant part of litigations, and the Head of Civil & Commercial Litigation is responsible for assigning court attendance tasks, responsibilities, tracking hearing dates, and supervising meetings with experts. They must also provide oversight on requests originating from the team and maintain control over attendance and departures.Reporting is an essential aspect of the role, as the Head of Civil & Commercial Litigation is required to provide regular updates to the Partners. They must also prepare daily, weekly, and monthly reports on tasks, progress, status, and results of litigations and services handled by the division.By actively contributing to the teams growth and needs, promoting best practices and client service quality, and attending key industry events, the Head of Civil & Commercial Litigation ensures the divisions success and the firms competitive advantage.The ideal candidate for this position should be a qualified lawyer with at least 20 years of post-qualification experience. Fluency in Arabic is a must and preferably bilingual lawyers (Arabic/English). They must have a proven ability to manage files and work under pressure while managing multiple projects. A real interest and background in litigation and arbitration, as well as strong relationship-building skills, are also essential.In summary, the position of Senior Legal Counsel Head of Civil & Commercial Litigation (Division) is a challenging and pivotal role within the Legal Department. The individual in this position plays a crucial role in ensuring the successful delivery of legal services and achieving positive outcomes for clients.DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIESThe duties and responsibilities of the Head of Civil & Commercial Litigation include but are not limited to the following:

  • Meeting Clients.
  • Ensuring meeting minutes are recorded during meetings.
  • Crafting tailored strategies for individual cases and clients after comprehensive consultations and document reviews.
  • Solving legal problems and identifying solutions and opportunities for new litigation services.
  • Compiling and forwarding service requests aligned with the established client and case strategies and ensuring they are prepared and submitted to the concerned department on time.

  • Advising clients on civil and commercial matters.
  • Drafting & preparing legal advices, contracts, legal notices, court pleadings, statements, and submissions.
  • Managing & reviewing draft legal advices, contracts, legal notices, court pleadings, statements, and submissions handled by the assigned litigation team members.
  • Monitoring the quality of submissions, advising on any amendments required to submissions and raising and rectifying any issues with projects at an early stage.
  • Understanding and monitoring the work on the Mahakem (Court) platform as required.

  • Ensuring the assigned litigation team members are equipped with enough work to meet/reach their individual and team expected targets and goals.
  • Assigning tasks & matters to the litigation team members.
  • Managing and leading the matters and process from start to finish.
  • Managing, supervising, and monitoring the assigned litigation team members with their daily tasks, progress of matters, and status of the tasks and matters.
  • Providing ongoing support to the assigned litigation team members of the division, mentoring team members, and helping others to be successful in their roles.
  • Supervising and ensuring all legal advices, contracts, legal notices, court pleadings, statements, submissions, and representation forms are prepared on time by the team.
  • Ensuring daily supervision and follow-up by the team with clients inquiries related to litigation matters handled by the assigned team members, while acting as the focal point of the litigation practice within the division. By supervising the assigned litigation team members and ensuring clients are contacted promptly and regularly with all litigation matters (discussions, progress, and results). Ensuring consistent email communication between litigation division team members and clients for updates on hearings, document exchange, and other pertinent matters.
  • Ensuring the teams successful delivery and completion of the matters while meeting all deadlines.

  • Assigning court attendance responsibilities to lawyers, closely monitoring their daily activities, tracking court hearing outcomes, and providing continuous court-related oversight.
  • Tracking dates of hearings and Expert meetings.
  • Attending and supervising the meetings with Expert along with submitting the necessary submissions and documents in relation to the litigation disputes handled by the team and reviewing the recorded minutes and decisions taken in the meeting.

  • Monitoring and endorsing requests originating from the team.
  • Maintaining control over the teams attendance and departures from the firm, judicial institutions, and governmental bodies.

  • Providing regular updates regarding all litigation matters and the assignments handled by each member of the team for each matter to the Managing Partner.
  • Preparing daily, weekly & monthly reports of tasks, progress, status, and results of the litigations and services handled by the assigned litigation team members.
  • Coordinating with other members of the Legal Department on strategies, status, decisions, progress of all legal cases, and issues concerning clients.

  • Working together with Partners and Senior Counsels to generate new litigation work.
  • Promoting best practices and consistent quality in client service, which will give the firm a competitive advantage.
  • Contributing to content for e-bulletins and client publications.
  • Initiating and attending key industry events and actively looking out for new work.
REQUIREMENTS
  • Qualified lawyer
  • Post-qualification experience ideally 20+ years, but we will consider other appropriate candidates.
  • Native Arabic speaker
  • Preferably bilingual (Arabic/English) lawyer, however, we will also consider native Arabic speakers with the right skill set.
  • Proven ability to take on responsibility and manage files.
  • Must be able to work under pressure and manage multiple projects.
  • Flexibility, positivity, and a real interest and background in litigation and arbitration.
  • Knowledge in team management.
