Job Description

Role Purpose Food scientist to support essential NEOM Food activities in product development of plant-based and alternative protein products encompassing high-protein nutrition bars bars, plant-based meat and other snack products. The food scientist will initially engage with external contract facilities to support product development whilst driving the design, and development of test facilities within NEOM. The role will develop a portfolio of alternative protein products as well as products enhanced with natural ingredients. These products will offer health and wellness benefits to the consumer and will be developed in a sustainable and cost-effective manner Function-specific NEOM aims at providing opportunities for people to live healthy, productive, and fulfilling lives, while sustainably using the natural resources upon which they depend. NEOM partners with governments, local and international businesses, and knowledge institutes to transform ideas into policy, policy into action, and action into impact. NEOM uses its technical knowledge and experience, passionate staff, local presence, and global influence to make a lasting difference in peoples livability, especially in desert-like conditions in a world facing climate change.As part of this vision, the NEOM Food Company Novel Foods program will develop a portfolio of alternative protein products as (alternative meats, dairy, nutrition bars, and snacks) as well as products enhanced with natural ingredients. These will initially be developed through external contracting partners with an eventual goal of establishing product development capabilities at NEOM.The Food Scientist will provide expertise in new product development and support related facility development initiatives at NEOM. The successful candidate will therefore partner with internal and external stakeholders to contribute to success in following key Novel Foods activities:

  • Manage the development of NEOM Novel Food plant - based and alternative protein and natural ingredient portfolio including recipe development, ingredient fortification, and sugar replacement strategies
  • Ensure product portfolio concepts address health and wellness and are nutritionally wholesome
  • Ensure ingredients utilized in product formulation are safe, address nutritional requirements for the KSA population, and are sustainably resourced
  • Align product portfolio with customer needs and business cases
  • Identify opportunities for IP and ensure protocols for safe-guarding potential trade secrets are implemented and followed
  • Partner with external contracting facilities in product development and scale-up at batch and commercial launch
  • Ensure external facility layouts meet safety, sustainability, and regulatory requirements to ensure compliance with import and consumer regulations
  • Conduct extended life-stability studies where necessary
  • Manage overall new product development projects including planning, designing, implementation, preparing budgets and forecast, monitoring project progress, and keeping stakeholders informed throughout project lifecycles
  • Monitor new technology development for Novel Foods ingredients and processes
  • Support development of test kitchen capabilities at NEOM identify essential equipment needs, hygiene zoning, and operation needs
Knowledge, Skills And Experience5-10 years of experience in food sciences or project management in food industry or related fieldProven experience in product development within the food industry, with a preference for expertise in various food categories.Strong knowledge of sensory analysis and flavor chemistry related to the creation of the MVPsStrong project management skills, demonstrating the ability to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and efficiently handle multiple projects concurrently.Basic knowledge of Genesis formulation and Labeling Software. (Please note that procuring a license for this software could be advantageous for us.)Experience in handling univariate and multivariate statistical data with an open approach towards innovation, agile prototyping, and product design thinkingIn-depth understanding of food safety regulations, quality standards, and industry best practices.Strong networking skills and willingness to initiate engagement with internal and external stakeholdersAdvanced analytical interpretation and problem-solving skillsTechnical competencies in textural studies, rheological investigations, and microstructure elucidations is a plusFluency in English is requiredQualificationsBachelors degree in food engineering, or a related discipline
